“And Mom and Dad can hardly wait for school to start again,” goes the holiday classic ‘It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas’. While we sincerely hope that this isn’t the refrain stuck in your head during your kids’ or grandkids’ vacation week, we also understand that sometimes this is truly the case. With our first official snowfall sprinkling the ground on Monday, it is indeed beginning to look a lot like Christmas. Tree lightings are well under way; the holiday gift shopping is in process; and the kids are getting excited for winter vacation. Whether your children or grandchildren are young and old, explorers or homebodies, athletic or artistic, we compiled a list of fun school vacations activities for all ages and all interests. From breweries and nature walks to performances and interactive learning experiences, our local list is sure to keep your kids busy… and you from tearing out your hair.
For younger kids: A visit to Plaster Funtime in Braintree is a haven for creative (and messy) kids and adults. Bring your kids along to paint plates, figurines, bowls, cups, and more! Plaster Funtime is a wonderful space to share an experience with your children and grandchildren, walk away with a memento, and avoid cleaning up artistic messes! Additionally, the South Shore Children’s Museum is a wonderful place for indoor fun. With Gingerbread House Making events and standing, interactive exhibits, the South Shore Children’s Museum is a space that encourages kids of all ages to be inspired and learn!
For older kids: Take them skating! The Rockland Ice Rink hosts free skates and public hockey hours to accommodate the public. Spend a couple hours with your older children and grandchildren by taking them to play and skate. After you’ve worked up an appetite, head over to Gunther Toothie’s in Hanover for some of the South Shore’s most delicious bagels!
For adult kids: A trip to walk along the seaside and visit Mayflower Brewery in Plymouth is a relaxing way to spend time with your adult children. Browse the independent retailers downtown for some holiday shopping inspiration, and then embark on a brisk stroll along the harbor. Finally, pop into Mayflower Brewery to enjoy locally crafted and packaged beverages, which also make a great gift for the beer lover in your life. Spending an afternoon together exploring with loved ones can be the perfect remedy for holiday stress.
