St. Patrick’s Day weekend is an exciting time in Massachusetts, and you’re invited to join the party. Events are scattered throughout the week and into the weekend, both within the South Shore and Boston, allowing you to enjoy festivities in a number of areas.
Festivities on the South Shore
Gather the kids for a special St. Patrick’s Day celebration on March 17th at the South Shore Children’s Museum. The day begins with a special storytime at 10:30 a.m. at Storybook Cove, followed by a treasure hunt at the museum at 11 a.m.
Interested in finding some thrills and chills? Take part in the 8th annual St. Pat’s Plunge on Saturday, March 18th at Peggotty Beach. All proceeds from the plunge support the Scituate St. Patrick’s Day Parade.
For those looking for excitement perfect for revelers of all ages, visit the annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Scituate, considered one of the largest St. Patrick’s Day parades on the South Shore. This year’s parade starts at 1 p.m. on Sunday, March 19th. Settle in early to catch a glimpse of the local bands, dance troupes and performers taking part in this year’s festivities.
Goings-On in Boston
The St. Patrick’s Day Road Race will take place in South Boston at 11 a.m. on Sunday, March 19th. If you still have energy, the St. Patrick’s Day Parade in South Boston will start at 1 p.m. at the Broadway MBTA station. The historic parade usually runs for two and a half hours, and typically draws between 600,000 and 1 million people. Drive in early and park far from the parade route to ensure you can get in and out of the area quickly. After taking in the parade, you can walk the Irish Heritage Trail.
For those interested in Irish music, the Dropkick Murphys, a popular Celtic punk rock group, will hold four concerts in Boston over the course of St. Patrick’s Day weekend. On March 15th, 16th and 17th, they’ll play at the House of Blues Boston. On March 18th, they’ll play at the Agganis Arena.
Many restaurants in South Boston and beyond will have St. Patrick’s Day specials. You can enjoy brunch before the parade and look up the best Irish bars to visit afterward.
